Back in 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. I figured to book accommodation after getting there, yet when I arrived, a big convention was in town and all the youth hostels and budget accommodation had no vacancies.

Hailing from the city-state of Singapore, I thought the possibility of just sleep at the terminal – only to discover the local airport, unlike Singapore’s, closes 24 hours. Unsure of quite what to do and getting a bit desperate, I hopped on public transport and found myself drifting towards the casino, reasoning I might spend those hours somewhere that stayed open through the night. Admittedly, this plan at my peak to succeed at an interview the next day, yet, as a student on a tight budget, I couldn’t afford.

The world needs more folks with such compassion.

Apparently, I appeared confused since a female student saw me wandering around downtown and asked if everything was alright. I explained my situation and without hesitation she offered I was welcome to sleep on a spare mattress in her student dorm at the local university – which was perfect, considering that was where the important interview was scheduled for the next day. Generously, she also provided me some free dinner: one filled rolls she brought back her part-time job. I had access to the bathroom and a secure location and safe to spend the night.

Looking back, it’s clear to me the significant risk she accepted as a woman inviting a male stranger she’d just met stay in her room. At that time I was in my male privilege bubble and did not consider to the potential danger. Now, as a father, I’m amazed she took that chance – but still deeply appreciative.

Ultimately, I did not attending the Australian National University, and I never saw that kind stranger again, but I’ve never forgotten her amazing act of kindness. It is my wish the universe has repaid her generosity many times over. We could all use more people with such compassion.
