US air traffic controllers are increasingly looking for second jobs and reporting ill, as they remain on duty unpaid amid the federal closure, the transportation secretary has announced.
"The controllers are wearing thin," Sean Duffy told a news outlet on Sunday, as certain aircraft were halted on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.
After the federal closure on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were instructed to continue performing their jobs uncompensated.
But some have been missing, causing terminals to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has exacerbated delays due to climate and additional factors.
Over three thousand US flights were postponed on Sunday, and the secretary said he expects the situation to grow worse.
"I observe the stress," he said in an interview on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had spoken to multiple professionals to hear their concerns firsthand.
"They're taking side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I work for Uber, can I secure another source of earnings to make ends meet?'" he added.
Duffy further mentioned that on the previous day twenty-two notifications at airfields said flights would be held up due to a shortage of workers - among the peak since the shutdown started.
The American federal closure entered its 26th day on the weekend, rendering it the second most extended halt in the past.
He has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would slow down the quantity of planes in the air if there is a deficit of security staff.
In his interview, he would not answer directly when asked if it was secure to travel by air in the United States, and instead issued a personal plea to controllers.
"I need my staff concentrating on the airspace, not on the finances at home," Duffy stated.
On that day, certain flights were stopped at Los Angeles International Airport due to staffing shortages, causing disruption at the fifth most active terminal in the country and among the most crowded in the globe, as well as additional travel extending upward to the metropolis of Oakland.
