Democrats Criticize Trump After He States They Should Face Capital Punishment
Democratic officials demonstrated anger after the ex-president accused a group of Democratic representatives of being "betrayers" and declared they should be arrested and punished "by death" following their release of a disputed video.
The Recording That Triggered the Dispute
The video footage, released on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic elected officials who formerly acted in defense or defense roles.
"Similar to us, you all took an pledge to protect and uphold this national charter," the representatives stated in the 90-second video. "And right now, the risks to our constitution don't only come from foreign nations, but from right here at home. Our laws are explicit, you can decline unlawful commands, you can refuse illegal orders, you must refuse unlawful commands. No one has to follow orders that contravene the law or our founding principles."
Trump's Angry Reaction
The clip appeared to provoke a furious response from the ex-president.
On the following morning, Trump published on Truth Social: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional publication, he stated: "This is really bad, and Risky to our Country. Their comments cannot be permitted to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent post, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also shared a statement that stated: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Leaders React
Following Trump's comments on that day, Democratic leadership published a combined statement censuring the statements.
"Violent politics has no position in the United States," they declared. "Representatives who participated in the video all served our United States with tremendous patriotism and distinction. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's appalling and risky threats of violence against members of Congress, and call on Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."
The opposition officials also mentioned that they had been in communication with law enforcement "to guarantee the protection of these officials and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must immediately remove these extreme digital publications and recant his violent rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the declaration stated.
Officials' Strong Response
The lawmakers who were featured in the video also published a response.
"We identify as veterans and defense specialists who care for this United States and swore an pledge to safeguard and uphold the constitution of the United States," they declared. "That oath lasts a lifetime, and we intend to maintain it. No threat, intimidation, or call for violence will prevent us from that important responsibility."
"The significant point is that the president views it liable to punishment by death for us to repeat the law," they stated. "Our service members should understand that we have their support as they carry out their vow to the founding principles and duty to follow only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."
They continued: "Every American must unite and denounce the president's requests for our death and political violence. This is a period for ethical certainty."
More Partisan Responses
The Democratic Senate minority leader also censured Trump's statements and posted on social media: "Let's be crystal clear: the former president is calling for the death of government members."
He continued: "This is an clear THREAT. Each congressional member, each house member, every American – without partisan consideration – should denounce this without delay and absolutely."
The Conservative official supported Trump's claim that the Democrats had been involved in "rebellion", characterizing the video as "extremely improper", commenting: "This constitutes very harmful, you have prominent officials of the government instructing military personnel to disobey orders, I think that's unprecedented in US history."
The Republican leader also according to sources told journalists that in what he examined of Trump's publications, Trump was "explaining the offense of rebellion" but that "legal experts have to examine the terminology and establish all that."
White House Reaction
During a White House press conference on that day, when asked by a reporter, "Would the president want to put to death members of Congress?", the executive branch representative answered: "Absolutely not."
"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is responding to," the official stated. "We see active officials of the American legislature who worked together to orchestrate a recorded statement to personnel of the American armed forces, to active duty service members advising them to defy the commander in chief's proper directives."
She said: "The sanctity of our defense system depends on the chain of command, and if that system is broken, it can cause fatalities, it can lead to confusion, and that's what these congressional representatives ... are essentially encouraging."
