Line of Duty Confirmed for Seventh Series on the British Broadcaster
The beloved police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh installment, announced by the BBC.
An upcoming six-part season written by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, as confirmed by the network.
Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."
The previous season wrapped up in recent years with a finale that drew in over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only arrived recently.
Fresh Obstacles for AC-12
Series seven begins with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by production details.
Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue tasked to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.
The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case to date."
New Character and Intricate Plot
A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for busts of organized crime, faces allegations of misusing his authority to act as a sexual predator.
However, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the shadows, plot details suggested.
In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."
"We're privileged to have had so many followers track the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh installment."
Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."
Cast Reactions
Martin Compston called appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".
"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."
"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.
The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is returning! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"
The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."
