Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
