Top Selection

The Substance Film

The filmmaker's bold satire tackles the oppressive nature of women's appearance as well as the perceived horrors of growing older. Hollywood star Demi Moore delivers an inspired acting turn playing Elisabeth, an aging film star forced into starring in a fitness program on the small screen. Forced aside due to her deceitful superior Harvey, she turns to a secretive and terrifying process known as "The Substance". This produces a new version of herself called Sue, leading to a steadily more parasitic dynamic between the two. This Friday, the streaming service Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This classic whodunit mystery stars Knightley in the role of Laura, a top-notch writer who decides to take a hiatus from writing about international wars to embark on an opulent ship with a terminally ill wealthy inheritor and philanthropist, her partner, plus additional filthy rich guests. But after an enigmatic female disappears from the ship during the evening and everyone claims she was never there, Laura's investigative instincts kick in. Available now, the Netflix platform

Presence

The acclaimed director challenges his directorial skills through this clever ghostly tale shot entirely from the perspective of the phantom. As a family with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe settles into their new suburban house, the camera – AKA the Presence – tracks their movements. The teen shows signs of sensing the poltergeist, and the entity appears defensive toward her. But why? The premise is enjoyable that doesn't outstay its welcome, featuring a surprise that could catch you off guard. Saturday 11 October, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema Premiere

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

Cage fully commits to his eccentric image through this autobiographical spoof. He plays a narcissistic Hollywood actor playing himself who takes on a million-dollar gig to visit a birthday party at a Mediterranean location for billionaire Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Recruited by the CIA to investigate the alleged criminal, Cage's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” proves useful. October 11th, evening, the Channel 4 network

The Black Phone Horror

Scott Derrickson's locked-room horror remains effective even without a sequel. Located in 1978 Denver, multiple disappearances has rendered the local kids anxious. When Finney is kidnapped by the kidnapper and held captive in a dungeon, he dreads a terrible outcome. However, the non-functional line on the wall keeps ringing, with spooky callers providing assistance, and the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen could save him. A solid creepfest. October 11th, nighttime, the Film4 channel

This Dramatic Portrait

In the struggle between faith and wealth, it's a knockout win for Mammon in Showalter's wonderfully garish biopic regarding the shamed religious broadcaster plus her lawbreaking partner. Andrew Garfield portrays the greedy Jim, who declares early on, claiming divine approval for wealth. He and Tammy Faye commence capitalizing on the American public's Christian beliefs. It's a riot of poor styling, bad makeup and bad faith, though Chastain succeeds to show the character in a likable light. Next Tuesday, late night, Film4

The Spy Mystery

This period's second offering from Steven Soderbergh delivers a spy mystery as tight similar to the collars used by Fassbender's UK spy. His assignment is to identify a double agent among the team from five suspects – among them is his own wife. The two stars are experts of understated style, resulting in an engaging mental battle of deception or honesty develops. The supporting cast participate the intelligent intelligence fun.
