The buzz around this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The secret is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a audacious trailer featuring intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team might be building a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. At this moment, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
What Makes Divinity Special
The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it pioneered the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, player agency, and deep class systems—traits that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs only possible with a specific type of character with a unique decision path.
The series is also famously permissive, letting players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Most missions can be solved in a variety of manners, often in surprising fashion.
- You might progress the story because you heeded something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a inventive way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is precisely these elements that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, players can look forward to another adventure in this legendary franchise.
