The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller Merging Survival Horror with Social Deduction Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several intriguing future games, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a girl containing several human souls inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct souls, all possessing their own anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Based on revealed footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy hospital, though additional clips show the protagonist exploring a abandoned church.
A World of Personal Horror
"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to others can activate something primal inside us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are specific to every individual."
The central mechanic revolves around managing the persona that emerges at any given moment. However, these identities will change involuntarily as you play. While exploring, each soul's fears become exaggerated and attack the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Decision
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by nurses all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Figures in the waiting room have enormous flowers growing from their necks are. Flowers are an ever-present theme, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four souls asserts that the body belongs to them," notes a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."
Once players have deduced a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, because each soul can lie or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The last one standing could be a fraud. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is can be wishlist on digital storefronts.
