The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Song
This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new opening credits. It features the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and making their mark, while teasing at several agonizing backstories for characters such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
All in all, the opening appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition created by producer and singer the talented musician. This piece from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one put out by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental choice, and I believe that devotees of the sequel series will love its presence.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that was part of the show's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when cast member the performer added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The show's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.
Of course, Critical Role has already said that the series will have some changes and variations from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening appears as among these.
This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to get to know the personas of the second series, the actual play are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
