The Reason the DNC Refuses to Release its 2024 Election Autopsy: The Inside Story.

The move by the Democratic National Committee to suppress the release of its internal post-election analysis on the 2024 election appears shocking but entirely predictable. Averse to unpleasant candor, the party's leadership apparatus often functions more like a PR firm rather than a political organization devoted to building a volunteer base to secure victories.

A Climate Resistant to Internal Critique

Hesitant to depart from the party establishment's culture of conformity, the committee has remained within that legacy throughout this past year. Releasing the findings could have demonstrated that party leaders actually want to encourage open debate about the missteps which allowed Donald Trump to win re-election. However, the committee is acting under the pretense that there's nothing to glean following the tragic debacle from the last cycle.

"Here’s our North Star: will this lead to victory? If not, it becomes a sideline issue from the core mission," a rationale which was presented to justify concealing the report.

Major Failures an Autopsy Could Have Examined

An autopsy report of substance would not dodge key points of failure. These include:

  • Electoral Alienation: Losing of millions of voters that backed the Democratic ticket in 2020 proved pivotal in the close 2024 election.
  • The Choice to Seek Re-election: The unwavering insistence of the incumbent to seek re-election, and a very late withdrawal, has been criticized as denying the party's base of open primaries.
  • Abandoning Everyday Americans: Amid economic anxiety, the electoral effort is criticized for ceding to corporate donors' interests without successfully attempting to challenge the impact of big business.
  • A Foreign Policy Factor: An unwillingness to adjust an approach regarding a ongoing war reportedly led to alienating key demographic groups, particularly with young people, Arab American communities, and Muslim Americans.
  • Losing Young Voter Backing: Extensive evidence demonstrates a major decrease of Democratic support from voters aged 18-29.

A History Shunning Scrutiny

This refusal aligns with a recurring tendency of evading hard truths. It echoes a situation where the vast majority of elected Democrat in Congress acquiesced to a sitting president's decision for running for re-election until a disastrous public debate performance forced a reversal.

Meanwhile, a significant majority of Democratic voters were consistently telling surveyors of their opposition to the incumbent to be the nominee.

Campaign Spending Questions

An honest autopsy might also investigate issues regarding financial allocations, including how much money were directed to high-priced advisors and media firms over the course of a campaign that burned through a staggering amount over a few months.

The Larger Problem

Fundamentally, the suppression of the official autopsy highlights an allegiance toward the existing power structure who engineered a losing national race. The message for rank-and-file members – including millions of small donors – is that they cannot be trusted to understand the lessons the insiders say they discovered from an analysis based on conversations with insiders.

An organization incapable to critically review where it went wrong is unlikely to escape the rut which was so beneficial to their opponents.
