The Reform UK leader Claims Educators of ‘Indoctrinating Children’ on Race Issues
Nigel Farage has asserted that educators would initiate walkouts shortly after a success at the polls for his party, charging that they are “poisoning our kids” by telling children that black pupils are victims and white children oppressors.
During an event for a Michigan-based religious institution, the politician expressed his viewpoint on British schools, stating that the “radical left-wing” had “taken over schooling”.
“I expect a teachers’ strike soon after securing a victory,” Farage commented during a Q&A session.
“They are corrupting young minds. They are telling them to feel guilt about their nation. They inform an eight-year-old black child that he is oppressed and little Oliver, who is white, who is eight that he is a perpetrator. They create division, instead of fostering unity. They promote this harmful mindset.”
Reacting to Farage’s claims, Daniel Kebede rejected the notion that the education system was controlled by Marxists as “nonsense”. He pointed out that any strikes must relate to educators’ working conditions, and questioned whether Reform would attack these right after taking office.
“Farage has built his political career on coded rhetoric and now, like Trump, he is lining up teachers and their organizations for a fight,” Kebede stated.
“I think that’s grossly irresponsible. Neither I nor our union – advocate such divisive theories as he claims … If he were to lead the government he would undermine state services, including education … and he would be a disaster for education and children.”
Reform, which is leading the polls by about 10 points, has not set out much detail on a proposed education policy and seems not to have appointed an education spokesperson.
Nonetheless, Farage’s remarks suggested the group would reform the educational framework. He said: “We have got a massive job with education – truly monumental. And, it won’t happen quickly; it will take us years, years to turn this around.”
Farage expressed that younger generations are receptive to analytical thought, but millennials were “absolutely hopeless”.
Paying tribute to Charlie Kirk, Farage said: “All I want education to do to teach critical thinking – to instruct people that multiple perspectives exist and they should decide for themselves rather than what’s happening now where one is virtuous and one is evil. This is a huge undertaking in both Britain and America.”
The party has conflicted with a major educators’ organization, after Kebede called the party “extremist and prejudiced” and dismissed Farage as “a poundshop Donald Trump”.
Farage has accused Kebede of being “an avowed radical” … an individual intent that our children should be poisoned through education, their minds should be poisoned regarding national issues” and has argued that the organization seeks to brainwash youth opposed to his party.
Almost one million people work in schools in the UK, with educators comprising half and the others teaching assistants and support staff. The major education union has hundreds of thousands of members.
Countrywide walkouts over educators’ salaries and work environment in 2023 caused widespread disruption in schools and millions of days of lost learning for students.
At the US event, the Reform leader also vowed to promote the digital courses of the Christian college in the UK. He stated such groups were “part of the fightback”, noting: “I am serious. I will help attract vast numbers of youth to these educational programs. I make that commitment now and I will follow through.”
The institution, a small private Christian college, offers free courses. Its website states: “Comprehensive learning is necessary for personal happiness and to perpetuate the blessings of freedom. It offers these beautiful courses for no charge to all who wish to learn.”
