Trump's Woke Warning Misses Europe's Real Danger: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy presents a misguided view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" policies pose an existential risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument rests on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The true challenge facing the EU is not societal but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Growth Gap Between Europe and the US

The data paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the EU. Over this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly 50% of the global top fifty tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

The growing disparity is driven by superior productivity growth in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last fifty years, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity raises a vital issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is largely a contest between two between the United States and China, with Europe starting at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

A number of major factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and agile system for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which limits the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is divided among twenty-seven different national systems, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to advance substantial change. Key reports on European competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for major reforms.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths could support much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: high-quality human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's technological decline has been steady. But, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
