Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research indicates that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"People using such medications need to be informed of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Experts believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

People who have stopped the jabs report a powerful return of hunger.

"I experienced something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle support.
