Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, he revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

This means, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil lead with three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
